Optimising the UV-C source and preparing for experiments
Develop and test a prototype for stimulating vines using UV-C flashes to reduce fungal inputs by 50%
Monitoring the impact of the technology
Disseminating the technology to the general public and to players in the wine industry
– Validate the new UV source on a preliminary prototype in the greenhouse and in the field (2021): UV Boosting and the University of Bordeaux will test the different UV sources selected in the stage in greenhouses and small fields for biological validation and to elaborate the preliminary prototype (PP) taking into account only the best UV source.
– Optimize the preliminary prototype towards a full-scale prototype and test it in 3 vineyards (2022): On this basis, the PP system components (lamps, reflectors, energy expenditure) will be optimized by UV Boosting and Laplace Laboratory to obtain the full-scale prototype (FSP). Once 3 FSPs have been produced, demonstration tests will be carried out in 3 commercial vineyards. Demonstrator farmers will be trained by UVB according to the technical specifications and demonstration protocol defined above. The effectiveness of the prototype in the field will be demonstrated under different European climates and pedoclimatic conditions in 2 countries (FR and ES) under the management of UV Boosting with the close support of TORRES.
– Industrialize an industrial prototype and equip 15 vineyards (2023): Once these FSPs have been validated, the industrialization of UV devices will extend the scale of the project. Optimization of the UV lamp production process and their inclusion in the machine will lead to the production of 6 to 8 prototypes industrialized by UV Boosting and Laplace Laboratory (IP) (€25k/prototype). These final prototypes will be demonstrated at 15 sites in France, Italy and Spain. Analysis of this demonstration phase will be carried out by UVB to identify the additive, synergistic and antagonistic relationships of UV treatment with current solutions.
– Transfer the technology to other crops (2024): The results of all demonstrations are to be exploited, transferred and reproduced by UV Boosting. A market analysis and pricing strategy, reproducibility and transferability studies and an operating strategy will be carried out.-
Monitoring the socio-economic impact of the technology: The productivity and socio-economic impact of UV technology will be analyzed: The University of Bordeaux and UV Boosting will assess the technology’s impact on crop productivity, disease levels and plant health. In addition, TORRES will monitor the economics of fungicide reduction.
Monitoring the environmental impact of the technology: The impact of the technology on the surrounding ecosystems (auxiliary fauna and microbiome diversity) will be carried out by the University of Bordeaux. In parallel, human health will be studied by UV Boosting, Université de Bordeaux and TORRES (C2.1): methods and equipment to protect users and the residual impact of the technology on the berries will be studied.
Monitoring the impacts of production and product life: In parallel, the added value of the project will be studied by all partners: machine Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) will be addressed, as will the carbon footprint. Finally, the project will be examined from the perspective of LIFE’s key project indicators (KPIs), in order to meet the expectations of the European Commission.
Set up a dissemination plan: To disseminate the results obtained during the project, it will be necessary to plan the communication strategy during and after the project. A dissemination plan will be developed and implemented through the design of dissemination and communication materials.
Communicating the project: To pass on the knowledge accumulated during the project, particular attention will be paid to communication and dissemination actions. To this end, communication tools will be created, including a website.
Networking activities will also be carried out (e.g. webinars). Finally, end-user and advisory committees will be set up and run.
